Folklore, retold

The story as it is told

A retelling, not a citation. What follows is the story as the most widely circulated popular accounts tell it — folklore encyclopedias, translations, and the versions that have travelled furthest. It is synthesized rather than keyed line by line to the dated primary texts, and popular versions drift from what those texts actually say. The cited, source-by-source record begins further down this page, and where the two disagree, the record wins.

Night. A traveller alone, treed by a wolf pack.

He's up the trunk, out of reach, and the wolves circle below.

And then the wolves do something wolves do not do.

They stack.

Shoulder onto shoulder, one climbing onto the next, building a living ladder up the trunk toward him.

And they're still short

The tower reaches, and it isn't tall enough.

So the wolves call for their leader.

And what comes is not a wolf.

It's an old woman. Or, in some tellings, a cat-creature.

And she climbs the stack of wolves.

The man in the tree gets his blade out and takes her head, or her arm.

The tower collapses. Everything scatters.

And at dawn he follows the blood into town

That's the ending, and it's the same in every version.

There's a blood trail, and it doesn't lead into the forest.

It leads into the village.

Who it turns out to be

The variants are regional, and the reveal is always domestic.

KōchiKaji-ga-baba. A pregnant woman and a courier are treed. The leader is a white-furred wolf wearing a pot-helmet. It turns out to be the smithy's wife, and she is killed at home.

ShimaneKoike-baba. The leader climbs the stack wearing a tea-kettle lid on its head. Cut down, and traced — and it is the lord's own mother.

Who was an old cat all along.

Niigata, Yamagata, Fukushima, ShizuokaYasaburō-baba. A man's mother proves to be a demon, or an aged cat, her arm severed mid-transformation.

The armour is the tell

Look at what the commander is wearing.

A cooking pot for a helmet. A kettle lid.

The general of the wilderness — the thing a thousand wolves take orders from — is armoured in kitchen equipment.

That is not an accident and it is not comic relief. It's the story telling you, before the reveal, where she came from. She armed herself out of a farmhouse's cupboard, because that is where she lives.

What the story is actually about

The escorting wolf — the one that walks behind you on a mountain road and guards you as long as you don't stumble — audits your composure. That's the wolf file's front page.

This is the B-side, and it audits the pack's own chain of command.

Because the finding is: the pack is an org chart, and it literally stacks — and the figure at the apex is never a wolf.

In every version, the monster at the top is somebody's mother, or somebody's wife.

Discovered by following blood home.

The tale-family where the wilderness's commander turns out to live in your village, at your hearth, possibly in your family — and has for years.

The mechanism is supplied elsewhere

If you want to know how a man's mother came to be an old cat, this tradition has an answer ready.

A cat kept too long becomes something else. It grows a forked tail, it stands up, it speaks, it takes human form — and the form it takes is, almost always, an old woman.

So the reading assembles itself: the old cat replaced the old woman years ago. She has been sitting by the fire ever since. Eating with the family. Sleeping in the house.

And nobody checked.

The real wolves are underneath it

The zoologist Hiraiwa's reading is worth having, because it's respectful of both sides.

Real Japanese wolf behaviour is in here: nocturnal packs. Hierarchy. Remarkable jumping ability.

A pack that hunts at night, has a clear leader, and can get much higher up a trunk than you'd expect — rendered, as he puts it, in folklore's symbolic language.

The ladder is an exaggeration of something people had actually watched. The kettle lid is the part they added.

At a glance

Behavior
Packs tree a night traveler, then stack shoulder-to-shoulder into a living ladder; when still short, they summon their leader to climb the stack.
Powers
Coordination — the pack as an org chart that literally stacks.
Weaknesses
A blade at the apex: wound the leader and the blood trail leads home to the impostor by dawn.
Oddities
  • The leader is never a wolf — always someone's mother or wife, usually an aged cat that replaced her years ago.
  • The general climbs wearing kitchen armor: a pot-helmet or a tea-kettle lid.

Overview

Night. A traveler treed by a wolf pack — and the wolves, failing to reach, stack shoulder-to-shoulder into a living ladder [ja-senbiki]. Still short, they call for their leader — an old woman, or a cat-creature — who climbs the stack; the treed traveler's blade takes her head or arm; and at dawn the wound is traced into town [ja-senbiki].

The variant table (the reveal is always domestic)

  • Kaji-ga-baba (Kōchi): a pregnant woman and courier treed; the leader is a white-furred wolf wearing a pot-helmet — revealed as the smithy's wife, killed at home [ja-senbiki].
  • Koike-baba (Shimane): the leader climbs wearing a tea-kettle lid; cut down, revealed as the lord's own mother — an old cat all along [ja-senbiki].
  • Yasaburō-baba (Niigata/Yamagata/Fukushima/Shizuoka): a man's mother proves to be a demon or aged cat; her arm severed mid-transformation [ja-senbiki].
  • The zoology (Hiraiwa): real wolf behavior underneath — nocturnal packs, hierarchy, "remarkable jumping ability" — rendered in "folklore's symbolic language" [ja-senbiki].

The reading

The okuri-inu's inversion, and together they complete the wolf file: the escort audits your composure; the thousand wolves audit their own chain of command — the pack as an org chart that literally stacks, topped by a management figure who is never a wolf. That's the type's real engine: in every variant the monster at the apex is someone's mother or wife, discovered by following blood home — the tale-family where the wilderness's commander turns out to live in your village, at your hearth, possibly in your family. (The nekomata doctrine supplies the mechanism: the old cat replaced the old woman years ago, and nobody checked.) The kitchen-armor details — pot-helmet, kettle-lid — are the tell: the wild's general is armored in domestic equipment. This is the wolf file's B-side, its arm-severed/blood-trail grammar shared with the bashō monk and Rashōmon.
